Have you ever thought to yourself, “One day I want to participate in a triathlon”

Well, now’s your chance.

Last August, my wife Megan and I completed our first triathlon together. We both agreed it was one of the most physically demanding – and one of the most rewarding – experiences of our lives. Competing and completing a triathlon with hundreds of other athletes was an incredible thrill. And so, we’ve signed up to participate in another triathlon this year.

But this time, we’ve raised the bar by adding greater purpose and inviting others to participate with us.

Here’s the huge goal: to recruit people to participate in the Steelman Triathlon (August 12, 2018) in order to:

  • Train and complete a triathlon together
  • Raise awareness of the Persecuted Church around the world and
  • Collectively support, pray and raise $10,000 to support Voice of the Martyrs, an organization committed to encouraging, equipping and supporting persecuted Christians in over 65 countries around the globe.

Since Kairos Partnerships is committed to building into, encouraging, supporting and serving hungry kingdom leaders around the world, we are convinced that this partnership will be a strategic, meaningful and rewarding way to partner with leaders around the globe who are suffering simply because of their faith in Jesus Christ. This allows participants to train and encourage one another, as well as learn about, advocate, encourage, pray for and further equip leaders around the world.

The apostle Paul, wrote to the church in Colossae while imprisoned because of his faith. As he wrote the letter, he asked the Colossian people very simply: “remember my chains” (Col. 4:18). Persecuted Christians experience great hardship: imprisonment, beatings, fines, harassment, torture, social hardships and oppressive religiously intolerant government regulations. And yet, they are often forgotten or ignored by Christians in the West.

Heeding Paul’s words, we are challenged to remember their chains by encouraging, supporting and praying for them in their suffering. It’s for this reason we are calling this initiative Tri2Remember. This triathlon will help to raise awareness on their behalf.

There are 3 ways to participate at different distances in the Steelman Triathlon at Lake Nockamixon (PA) on August 12, 2018.

  • Sprint triathlon (0.5-mile swim, 14-mile bike, 3.1-mile run)
  • Olympic triathlon (1-mile swim, 28-mile bike, 6.2-mile run)
  • Alternate/team triathlon (team of 3, each person participates in one leg of a sprint triathlon).

Thus far, 10 people have signed up to participate in the triathlon (including a family who will be doing the alternate triathlon where their sons, with one son under ten year old!).

Having 10 people sign up is a good start – but we want you to join us as well.

Frequently asked questions:

I’ve never done a triathlon before, but I think I might be tempted to try. Should I?

Yes, you should! Go for it! This is a great opportunity to try – and to participate with us to support Christian brothers and sisters around the world. If you don’t believe it’s feasible to do a full triathlon (for example, you don’t think you are a very strong swimming) consider joining a team and doing the running or biking portion of the event).

Can anybody participate in T2R is this for people connected with Kairos Partnerships or those in the immediate area)?

Yes! Anybody who wants to participate can. Some people who have already registered live out West and will be flying in to participate in T2R.

What commitments are involved to participate in the T2R initiative?

There are 5 commitments we are asking from T2R triathlon participants:

  • Train for a triathlon (at any of the 3 distance levels), as well as purchase and/or borrow equipment (we will help you with this!)
  • Register for the Steelman Triathlon (around $90).
  • Commit to ongoing prayer for Voice of the Martyrs and the persecuted Church throughout the training process.
  • Share your triathlon training efforts and Tri2Remember involvement with friends, family members, neighbors and co-workers via word of mouth and/or social media.
  • Raise a minimum of $300 to go entirely towards Voice of the Martyrs (goal: $1,000 for each participant, but we will raise this collectively as a team for an overall goal together).

When do I have to decide?

There’s no set deadline (although registration for the Steelman Triathlon can fill up, so deciding sooner than later is strongly encouraged). Additionally, developing a training schedule will be important and having a longer runway of training is strongly recommended).

How will I train and will we be training together at all?

There are training schedules we can provide for you (and many are available with a quick internet search). For those who live in the area, we will have times for training, prayer and connecting leading up to the triathlon, but most training should be done on your own schedule.

I can’t participate in the triathlon, but I still want to support T2R. How can I do that?

Yes, there are two ways you can get involved:

First, you can donate money, where all proceeds to Voice of the Martyrs, on behalf of a T2R participant.

Second, you can help spread the word about (a) the persecuted Church (b) about VOM and (c) about the triathlon. You can do this through word of mouth or email and by sharing T2R on social media (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat, etc).

Third, you can encourage the T2R participants and joining us for the morning of the triathlon at Lake Nockamixon on August 12, 2018.

Great! Let us know by using the contact form below.

So, push yourself and sign up for an Olympic distance triathlon. Or start smaller with the sprint distance. Or consider gathering a few friends and creating a team of 3 to complete it together as a relay.
