Leaders and Social Media: 7 Questions To Ask
I have a love-hate relationship with social media.
Most days I enjoy it – keeping abreast of the news, staying connected with friends, and learning from other leaders. But some days I’m fed up, tempted to delete all my accounts. Maybe you feel this, too. My teenage sons hear me say frequently that social media is like fire: if kept in the fireplace, it can provide warmth and light; if used incorrectly, it can burn down the house.
How are we to lead in a world where social media now seems ubiquitous? Here are 7 questions to ask ourselves when using social media:
What is my motive? The motive question
Is this honoring and beneficial? The honor question
Where’s my attention going? The attention question
Is this a realistic picture of my life and leadership? The authenticity question
How is this impacting my soul? The spiritual health question
Would I ever regret what I’m about to post at any time in the future? The perspective question
Who else might help me navigate this in order to make wise decisions on these platforms? The community question
These questions can serve as guardrails and training wheels to help us lead well – in person and online.
